CALLING ALL PROPOSALS FOR THE 2008/2009 XPERIMENTAL SEASON

This is NOT a chance to do a really neat version of "Wicked!"

This is your best, easiest, and juiciest chance to stage something that speaks to your issues and to our shared community. What do you want audiences to gather around and interact with? Which voices and bodies have been too long censored or ignored? How do you elevate performance beyond "live cinema" and into an art form that commands the immediacy of the HERE AND NOW? What aren't students adequately exploring in their four-year educations?

With all the gum-flapping Rarig annually devotes to the topic of "diversity", here's your chance to seize the bull by the horns and do something about it.

THE PROPOSAL

One of the biggest things we're pushing for next year are reliable, well-constructed artistic teams. Priority will unabashedly be given to proposals that have designers and stage managers right off the bat. You can use time during next year to hold auditions to cast your project. If you don't have all your ducks in a row, at least give us your gameplan of who you want to work with, why, etc.

Also, we're setting the bar decently high in the "theory" department. Don't expect a proposal for "Death of a Salesman" to be accepted simply on the merit of it being "a good play." Reach for something more along the lines of: "Willy Loman is the iconic everyman, and so I will want to stage it in the arena-style and have his first entrance be from the audience to create a strong sympathetic bond from the very beginning."

  1. Basically, think BIG and HARD about three-dimensional THEATRICAL SPACE.
  2. DO NOT get stuck in the rut of needing to stage things "realistically."
  3. DO NOT think that only published plays are the only things worth staging.
  4. DO NOT eclipse "process" with "product." If anything, "process" is paramount.

TIMELINES

You have until Friday, April 4th to put together your proposal (including Spring Break). Note that next year will be a strict four-show season. Your proposed show MUST fill one of the following slots:

October 23rd – October 26th, 2008
December 4th – December 7th, 2008
March 12th – March 15th, 2009
April 23rd – April 26th, 2009

There will be no SENIOR SHOWCASE next year, so would-be senior projects should apply for one of these slots. Seniority, however, will not bias your proposal in any way.

If you have any questions, or need some application council, feel free to approach any current X Board members.

Happy proposing!
